Ash-West superintendent warns selectmen budget override possible

The override would also restore and fully pay for several sports and activities that were either cut or required a fee, Zapantis said. The curriculum renewal cycle -- which reviews and improves school courses over a period of six years -- would also be included in the original override, Zapantis added.

Selectman Chairman John Fairbanks asked if the district's $785,000 excess and deficiency account -- which is made up of excess money not used during the fiscal year -- should pay for such programs instead of an override.

Profile: Palo Altans for Government Effectiveness

Civic engagement didn't just pop onto the city's 2008 priority list.

Since 2003, a group known as PAGE (Palo Altans for Government Effectiveness) -- created by current Mayor Larry Klein, architect John Northway and a core of other well-known locals -- has been working to promote respectful involvement with local government.

The group emerged during a rancorous period in Palo Alto's political history, motivated by a divisiveness that had overcome civil civic processes, Klein and Northway said at the time.

The group founders believed that effective engagement and dialogue would help the community address critical issues. In addition, PAGE has espoused a particular interest in involving and respecting staff members of local public agencies.

In 2004, through a series of community meetings, the group developed a list of 13 "Guiding Principles for Palo Alto."

Available as an appendix on PAGE's Web site, the principles include: "Be willing to compromise," "Build relationships ..." and "Once a solution is reached, support it and move on."

In the spring of 2007, PAGE released the paper, "Building Civic Engagement and Social Capital in Palo Alto: Making a Good Community Better." It hosted two forums that spring on community building and interacting with the government.

Google's business Apps sparks debate

With the launch of Google Apps for Your Domain, the online search giant hopes to cash in on the market for-on demand applications. Analysts have welcomed the move but some question the company's motives and wonder whether our personal data is safe in Google's hands.

Launched on Monday, Google Apps for Your Domain is a series of on-demand applications that individuals and companies can use to handle basic functions. It includes Gmail (Google Mail in the UK) for email, Google Calendar, Google Talk for instant messaging and Page Creator for page design. A word processor and a spreadsheet are still in beta testing.

James Governor, of analysts Red Monk, said that the current Google approach was to produce applications that were "Good enough. It's not about releasing polished applications".

Washington Post

Philip Bennett, the Washington Post's managing editor, paid a visit to the University of California, Irvine for a little chat earlier this week. During his comments on the subject of religion and politics, Bennett claimed that the MSM should hire more Muslims because the media has too many misconceptions about Islam. Bennett told the UCI audience, "At the Post I want more Muslim readers and I want more Muslim journalists." One wonders how far this new understanding of Islam in the media will go for Bennett, though? Will his desire to be inclusive and to create a new politically correct understanding go as far as excusing Islamofascism as we try to better understand Islam?

The report in the Daily Pilot from Newport Beach, California also reported that the newsroom at the Washington Post was even debating whether or not they should even use the word "Islamist" because it might be too "contentious." This WaPost debate alone does not auger as well for any better understanding as it does for overlooking the evil perpetrated in the name of Islam in favor of making believe that our understanding of them will somehow stop the violence and hate against us.

The Visionary

As I said, it is differentbut we will have advertising campaigns, TV commercials, people talking on TV to explain our program. We will use modern methods for campaign. I do not want to call them western, they are international [methods].

Do you think the National Front for Change represents a real threat to the NDP in the parliamentary race? This is an internal issue for opposition parties whether to run individually or form a coalition. It is up to them. This is not going to affect or change any of our plans. As I said we are taking these elections seriously and we are going to work very hard to win every seat. I do not really have to comment on what they [opposition parties] are doing. I will be happy to see more opposition members in the parliament and I will be happier to see the NDP maintaining a majority in parliament.

Free rollerskating at doomed hall

A LOCAL authority is hosting a free day of rollerskating at a doomed leisure facility.

Harrow Council is throwing open the doors to Byron Hall, in Christchurch Avenue, for all-day skating today.

If the council continues with its plans, the hall, along with the iconic 1970s skate park and the existing leisure centre, will be torn down to make way for a new £36million leisure centre.

Dissing the Disgruntled! Grazer-Gate Update: A summary of the L.A.Times' second-time-farce scandal is here. The most recent at-bats ...

Resigned editorial page editor Andres Martinez says the paper's newly-arrived editor and publisher

caved to a disgruntled newsroom that is annoyed at [the paper's owners in] Chicago, annoyed at them and annoyed at the autonomy of the opinion pages.

The newsroom unrest, Martinez says, is partly "ideological" (the news pages presumably being more conventionally liberal than his editorial page), partly "a matter of bureaucratic culture," and

some of it a personnel matter (there are some embittered former editorial board members that Kinsley and Carroll sent off to the newsroom).

Silverlight helps bring streaming video to Olympics Web site

How would you like to be handed this IT project: create a website that will present 2,200 hours of live, interactive video, plus integrated broadcast coverage. The site will have huge spikes of traffic, and operate under worldwide scrutiny, so it has to be designed for performance. It has to be done in the next 150 days; no schedule extensions are possible. And it must deliver a brilliant user experience.

That's the job in front of the developers for the Summer Olympics website, which also will offer expert commentary and sports biographies and permit users to share links to favorite event videos. During the MIX 08 keynote address on Wednesday, Perkins Miller, senior vice president of digital media for NBC Sports & Olympics, said that this was "the most ambitious online project."

During the Olympics, the site (demonstrated in prototype form during the keynote) will deliver video interactively for 17 days.

India Real Estate: Price Correction Looms

A great site and a great project is not necessarily a good investment because the land value may be too high. A cheap deal may be as bad because chances are the deal is cheap for good reasons. So these formulas do not work. We take a bottom-up view. In general, we prefer things that are below the radar screen of the typical institutional investor.

We are happy to invest in cities that an average US real estate fund manager has not heard of.
