Clinton Wins Here But Power Revolt Splits New York

The congresswoman's mother and political adviser, Una Clarke, said, “I would just want to say to him, some of those who stayed on the plantation were much more loyal to the liberation of our people than those who came off and were confused. Some were dragged off the plantation, and when they got off, they didn't know what to do. Then you have those who stayed on the plantation and were more strategic in helping those who got off."

Helen Diane Foster, a councilwoman from the Bronx, predicted the Harlem establishment would suffer a reduction in clout in the event of a strong showing by Mr. Obama.

“Clearly, it can't carry that much weight when you have the three [Messrs. Rangel, Dinkins and Paterson] doing the endorsement, you have Calvin Butts doing the endorsement, and these are pillars in Harlem," she said.

Jennifer Lopez Works Hard, But Not For the Money

I have every one of her albums & I like most of her movies. I do own one of her perfumes, but the others are not so yummy to me.

That being said, I think it's laughable when any rich celeb says they are not doing "it" for the money, but just to be creative. In Jenny's defense, she did say "I've been lucky that because of what I do as a performer, I've also been able to do stuff like fragrances that I love." Maybe what she should have said was "I've got more money than God, so I can afford to try the fragrance thing, as a different creative outlet, & if it fails, I'm still super rich so no harm done! If it succeeds, then I'll make even more money & yippee--I got to be creative!" I think that's more likely what all the celebs mean when they say stuff like that. I think it would be refreshing if/when one of them actually does make that kind of blunt statement.

Essay: A more casual approach to the bottom line

Back in my younger days, I had a pretty basic arrangement where money was concerned: Every week I'd earn a little bit of it and, just as regularly, through various transactions, it would end up in the hands of other people.

All very simple and straightforward.

There was no need for any smooth-talking advisers, helpful booklets, or weekend seminars designed to show me how a property investment in some emerging backwater could be the key to my long-term financial security.

But then marriage and a child came along, and suddenly it was important that there was enough money tucked away for a rainy day and maybe even a week in the sun, as well. Pension plans and retirement funds became hot topics, instead of being a conversational fallback.

And to top it all off? Thanks to the global economy, those of us within a slightly graying demographic now have international finance to worry about – which, as far as I understand it, involves prime lending rates, the price of various commodities, and the cost of a barrel of oil.

As a voice is stilled, memories are stirred

IT WAS THE spring of 1977. I was 12 years old, living in Landover, pondering my upcoming ascent to high school and sitting at a crossroads. I needed a baseball team to call my own, and it was obvious by then, six years after the Senators moved, that my hometown was not going to provide me with one.

I swallowed hard and told myself, "It's the Orioles or nothing." One night soon after, on the transistor next to my bed, I tuned in the D.C. station carrying the games. Guess who was there to welcome me to Orioles baseball, to Memorial Stadium and to Baltimore?

Chuck Thompson, of course. The franchise couldn't have asked for a better salesman. For that matter, neither could the city itself. I couldn't have asked for a better escort into this new, unexplored territory.

Daschle on Obama’s appeal: Hope versus fear

Blah, blah, blah. Never a substantive complaint about how he might personally suffer if the Democrats assume control. Tuesday night he called for a long visit and it became apparent he has had an epiphany. He suddenly realized that his greatest prosperity came during the Clinton years and that his seven figure pension was lost and his company bought out by an uncaring competitor because of rules changes initiated during the GWB presidency. He has voted as a social conservative for years, but last night said" It is unconscionable that any one in the richest country in history has to pay for health care or higher education. And I don't see why we haven't done something to get free of that damned foreign oil. And I don't think one more American boy should die for oil!" The thing is, he starts to draw Social Security in a couple of months, and there isn't a defined benefits pension plan any more so he really needs SS to be solvent so he can make it, and he sees privatization as his own road to ruin.

Are the laws in our justice system only for certain people to abide by, and not for others, because of their stature? Does anyone really believe that these companies do not have some of the best attorneys who absolutely knew they would be breaking the law by going along with the administration on this warrantless surveillance? ...The FISA court gives the surveillance issue a great deal of leeway and there's no reason not to obey the law. These companies went against their own privacy statements, guaranteeing confidentiality to their customers. Those House and Senate members who go along with this immunity do not represent their own constituents -- they represent the big special interests.

Yao's injury raises questions for Rockets' future

But the latest Yao setback may portend even worse karma for the future. For the record, this makes the third injury-muted season in a row for the sixth-year star from China. Last season, Yao managed to join the Rockets for only 48 games, seven less than he played in during the 2005-06 campaign.

So, after missing just two games in his first three seasons, the No. 1 franchise player appears to be unreasonably brittle. And this is just rotten news for the Rockets because their No. 2 franchise player is just as physically shaky.

LegCo Members Ask RTB For Better Local Coverage

YB Awang Haji Mohd Shafiee bin Ahmad said, "RTB has been allocated a budget of $52,808,811 for 2008/2009. There is only one crew in the Belait District. Being the largest district in Brunei, how can a crew make a good coverage in the district. Is there any plan to outsource to ensure comprehensive coverage?"

Minister of Energy YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya, in response, said, "Some activities that RTB are unable to cover in the Belait District are given to outsiders. The quality may not be good but it's enough to fulfil the objectives of covering all activities in the country."

YB Pehin Kapitan Lela DiRaja Dato Paduka Awang Gob Kin Chin, meanwhile, asked if RTB will be producing programmes in Chinese language, given that the radio station is doing so.

Hooked on technology

She also loves using her digital still cameras and has several video cameras, from a DVD camcorder to outdated tape-based models.

Clinical psychologist Roni Kabillo has treated several people who have had addictive relationships with computers and online games, some of whom have spent up to 16 hours a day playing online games such as World of Warcraft and RuneScape. "In the cases I'm familiar with, it's entirely to do with internet, interactive online games of a particular variety, where you have a character and you develop your character through various challenges," he says.

Dr Kabillo says there is a fine line between healthy online game playing and internet addiction, but believes there are some clear signs of compulsive behaviour. "I think in this category addiction would be where you're really not exercising other forms of socialisation."

Dr Kabillo has found that addiction to online gaming is more common among young men, particularly among those who are uncomfortable in social settings.
