Microsoft offers confusing viewpoints on SaaS

Microsoft is making a concerted effort to move itself towards a software-as-a-service model, Microsoft Subnet blogger Mitchell Ashley believes, "But lets face it. Microsoft has a long, long way to go," he says. Part of the problem is that Microsoft seems unwilling to acknowledge that the Linux platform (and to some extent, the Google cloud) is where so much of the SaaS action is today.

Ashley conducted a candid interview with Michael van Dijken, head of Microsoft's marketing efforts in the hosting and communications sectors while at the SaaS Summit 2008 conference in San Francisco. (Ashley posted a "micro-interview podcast" of the meeting in his "Converging on Microsoft" blog.). van Dijken works with network providers, media and entertainment companies, and service providers/hosted services.

Britney Spears fans must be asking themselves why the singer risks getting behind the wheel anymore. According to a video posted on TMZ.com, the singer blew through a red light and made an illegal turn against oncoming traffic, with her two sons in the backseat of her Mercedes as she was driving in Los Angeles on Thursday. The footage also apparently shows Spears' court-appointed monitor ducking in the passenger seat. The video came to light following Thursday's emergency hearing in her child-custody dispute with Kevin Federline, her ex-husband. Federline's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan hadn't seen the footage by the time the hearing commenced, and there's no word yet if this will affect his motion to prevent Spears from driving with her kids. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told MTV News on Friday that authorities weren't planning to cite Spears with any traffic violations because they hadn't been made aware of any unsafe left turns.

As always, I'm on the free-speech side of this issue. Each site's proprietor has a responsibility to not allow his comment sections to become racist, sexist, violent cesspools, and some sites are better at fostering a decent comment culture than others. But just because some sites become nasty is not a reason to demand regulation of the Internet, as Bill sometimes suggests, or to suggest that because some people in a comment section are juvenile jerks, that a site is Nazi-like in any way. The best way to deal with coarse commentary on the Internet is to point it out, shine a little sunlight, and push site proprietors to foster cultures of decency on their own sites. Comments sections can be nasty places, and there are very few sites that can claim theirs are totally and completely clean (including this one), no matter what moderation policies are in place.
