Federal judge shutters Wikileaks.org for posting bank documents

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has set off a free-speech tempest after shutting down a U.S. Web site for posting internal documents accusing a Cayman Islands' bank branch of money laundering and tax-evasion schemes.

The Bank Julius Baer & Co. said in papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco that a disgruntled executive fired for "misconduct" stole the documents and illegally posted them on Wikileaks.org. The bank also said a number of the documents have been altered, but it didn't provide details.

The site claims to have posted 1.2 million leaked government and corporate documents that it says expose unethical behavior, including a 2003 operation manual for the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The bank, based in Zurich, sued Wikileaks and its San Mateo hosting company Dynadot on Feb.

Sun backs Web 2.0 startups

Sun Microsystems has put its weight behind up and coming web 2.0 companies with the launched this week of a new initiative designed to provide UK startups with discounts on Sun technology and services.

The Sun Startup Essentials programme, which was originally launched in the States, will help eligible companies purchase a range of discounted products and services, including Sun Fire x64 servers and Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads technology, according to the firm.

Startups under the scheme can also rent discounted web hosting infrastructure from Sun partners Layered Technologies, NaviSite and NTT Europe Online, and gain access to free open source software including Sun's own.

"They will also get free technical support – the idea is to help startups make good decisions up front so as their needs go up they can sustain higher traffic," said Sun's Juan Carlos Soto.

BIND 9 DNS Administration Reference Book

This book comes to me in an unusual way. I received an email from the publisher and editor asking if I'd be willing to review BIND 9 DNS Administration Reference Book. Ok, that's not unusual. In fact, it happens to me all the time. What is unusual is that I'd never heard of Reed Media Services before. One reason is that they seem to be a smaller publishing house that was originally started to "print newsletter publishing, online publishing (including related software design), and providing related internet hosting services". The other reason is that they've only produced two books thus far (The OpenBSD PF Packet Filter Book is the other one).

NAACP checking out OCN report

The Orange County branch of the NAACP is looking into an incident at Orange County National Golf Club, where a noose was reportedly hung from a ceiling of one of the course's offices. The organization learned of the incident after it appeared in the Sentinel on Jan. 18.

The Sentinel detailed the PGA Tour's investigation of OCN after former employee David Brice, who is black, said he witnessed a noose in an outside-services office in June and sent a formal complaint to the Tour. The Tour got involved before hosting its Qualifying School at OCN in early December.

"Before we put out a position paper or a press conference, we try to do our fact finding," NAACP President Randolph Bracy said. "I find it very repugnant and a serious problem, so we want to find out more."

National security bona fides

Last summer, the media viewed her as "unstoppable." Well, the media was wrong both about Mrs. Clinton and about Mr. McCain. Yet, the journalists rarely smarten up.

Today they suffer what might be called divided euphorias. Some are euphoric about a freshman Illinois senator with no other experience in national government. Others are euphoric about a two-term New York senator from the most scandal-plagued presidency of the 20th century, who in her advanced state of obliviousness asks the electorate to admire her "experience." She actually ran an ad recently inviting the electorate to ponder telephones ringing in the White House "at 3 a.m."

Most Americans would rather not be reminded of what went on in the Clinton White House after hours and occasionally even during working hours.
