The ‘First Woman,’ Once Again
It is noteworthy that in January 2007, when Mrs. Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama declared their intention to seek the Oval Office, the top six circulating newspapers in the U.S. ran 59 articles with Mr. Obama in the headline and just 36 with Mrs. Clinton. Now that we have had a female presidential candidate who entered the race as a front-runner, I have to wonder if the next one will also be regarded as a "first." Even if, after 130 years of women running for president, we are finally ready to shed this label, my guess is that the novelty frame will persist. If one of the next presidential candidates should happen to be a woman and she is not framed as "the first" woman to run, she will surely be touted as the "only" woman in the race. However, either would be a shame, because women in politics should by now be regarded as normal, not strange.
A geek’s trip to Capitol Hill on Network Management
Melvin Ammori, General Counsel, Free Press David Burstein, Editor, DSLPrime George Ou, Editor at Large, ZDNet Haruka Saito, Counselor for Telecom, Embassy of Japan Christopher S. Yoo, Professor of Law and Communications, University of Pennsylvania Christopher Yoo - After a brief introduction by Scott Wallsten who explained that the order of the presentations will be reverse alphabetical order, Christopher S. Yoo kicked off his presentation. Professor Yoo explained that networks, like roads, aren't built for everyone to use them at the same time. Yoo gave the example that if a person wants to know how fast he can travel on a freeway, he wouldn't know until he got there because we can't predict exactly how many other people will be on the road at the same time. Yoo explained the difficulty in projecting network capacity and that we can't always be right when determining whether more capacity or network management was the answer.
EU reportedly close to blessing Google-DoubleClick union
Official approval is expected to come sometime next week, according to the Financial Times (subscription), beating the European Commission's self-imposed mid-April deadline by over a month. The Federal Trade Commission signed off on the deal in a 4-1 vote back in December, convinced that there was sufficient competition in the online advertising market to warrant approval. The EC announced its intentions to examine the merger in November, citing a preliminary investigation that suggested that the deal would negatively impact the EU's online ad market. The EC's probe also had a "what-if" element, as it attempted to discern whether DoubleClick would have grown into a viable competitor to Google had the deal not occurred. The ruling is both bane and blessing to Microsoft.
ARI 1Q profit, revenue rises
ARI Network Services Inc. reported Monday that it recorded increases in both profit and revenue for the fiscal first quarter. ARI (OTCBB: ARIS) posted net income for the quarter ended Oct. 31 of $243,000, or 4 cents per share, compared with $225,000, or 3 cents per share, for the same period a year ago. Revenue for the Milwaukee provider of electronic parts catalogs and marketing services increased 21 percent to $4.2 million from $3.5 million. ARI chairman and CEO Brian Dearing said the marketing services business continued to drive revenue growth. About 45 percent of the revenue growth was because of the acquisition of OC-Net Inc., a Cypress, Calif. company that provides Web hosting and e-commerce services, in January 2007. .
