Neither the story nor the art has instant child appeal. This wordy but heartfelt tale about patience and hope may take some selling, but libraries that want to build their multicultural collections should consider it.—Barbara Katz, Parish Episcopal School, Dallas, TX

PreS-Gr 1—Bright images of fruits and vegetables pop off the spreads of these cheerful board books. The text on most pages is simply the name of the featured food. Together, the words set up a rhythm and rhyme: "huckleberry/strawberry/watermelon/plum/apricot/mango/Let's have some!" The books give children the opportunity to identify known foods and learn new ones, count them, discuss their uses, and identify colors, making both titles fun and attractive additions.—Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK

Florida did it but can balanced scoring lead Xavier to Final Four?

The hallmark of Florida's back-to-back national championship teams was the Gators' incredible scoring balance. In both title seasons, they put all five starters in double figures while never having one player average more than 14.3 points per game.

Real-life experiences, really well done

Our own age, that is.

The first time Jerry Colbert listened to "Closer Than Ever," just after the revue's 1989 off-Broadway premiere, he thought it was ... OK.

"Now, I think, `How could I not have loved this show?!' " says Colbert, a Charlotte-based actor/singer featured in Collaborative Arts' current staging at Spirit Square. Maturity, Colbert explains with a shrug, has added him to the show's passionate fan base among theater insiders.

"It's filled with humanity," says Colbert, describing "Closer Than Ever" as a series of entertaining and often moving observations on a range of experiences, from dating to parenthood to the loss of a spouse. "All the songs address real-life situations that I think anyone who's achieved a certain age will relate to."

The show, by songwriting team David Shire and Richard Maltby Jr.

Jotspot Returns As Google Sites: Wiki-Style Collaboration

Ever since Google bought the wiki-based online application startup Jotspot in late 2006, people have been wondering if it had disappeared forever inside the bowels of the search giant. Tonight, Google's launching Google Sites, using Jotspot's technology to create a free group collaboration service that will be part of its online software suite Google Apps.

Google characterizes Sites, which had been hinted at in late 2007, as the biggest Apps launch since Apps Premier Edition a year ago, and it may be right. The new service lets people in an organization instantly create a wiki-style group workspace, where they can post text, videos, calendars, and various attachments for their group or department to view and edit. Scott Johnston, Google's senior product manager on Sites, has more in a blog post and video.

A year later, Chief Illiniwek debate remains at U. Illinois

Other University traditions have not been retired along with the Chief. The traditional music that was played when the Chief was the symbol is still played by the Marching Illini during halftime of sporting events at the University.

"There are people who say there's too much expression of the Chief Illiniwek still," said Tom Hardy, executive director for University relations. "They don't want him on homecoming parades, and they would change performance music from the band that pre-dates Chief Illiniwek because they associate it with the Chief."

Miranda Jimenez, junior in LAS, said she feels that using the traditional music of the Chief is encouraging people to hold on to the negative ideology the Chief represented.

"I think (the music) evokes the same ideologies of having a person perform traditional dances, and that's offensive," Jimenez said.

Primi Piatti is bringing a taste of Northern Italy to the Riverside-Avondale area.

Northern Italian food, for the curious minds, uses a lot less tomato in its recipes, instead giving preference to cheese and butter sauces.

Nobles & Knaves

Shanon, a professor of "cognitive philosophy," told Israel Radio on Tuesday.

Someone please enroll Mr. Shanon in a research methods course. At minimum, show him that "I don't believe" is a poor evidentiary standard outside the Department of Smart-Alecky Term Papers.

For purporting to instruct others about Scripture while also failing the most basic rules of evidence, Mr. Shanon is the Knave of the Week.
